I’m going to tell you something most people will never admit: your attention isn’t yours anymore. By the end of this letter, you’ll know how to take it back.

I'll share 3 key strategies to redirect your attention and transform your life and future.

Everything about attention starts with a hook; the first few seconds of a video, ad, movie, the first few lines of a book or even this letter. If the hook is strong enough, then you keep reading or watching and stay hooked.

Hooked (adj.)  → being attracted or intensely focused on something that you can’t stop it.

Movies are about hooks.
Social media is about hooks.
Instagram is about hooks.
TikTok is about hooks.
Facebook is about hooks.
Ads are about hooks.
News is about hooks. Think about headlines. How many times have you opened an app, clicked on a link, or turned up the volume on the TV just because a headline grabbed your attention?

If you’ve ever taken a writing class, you learned that the most important part of an essay is the hook, the introduction because if you don’t grab your reader’s attention in the first few lines, chances are they will not read the rest.

Everything is about hooks.

If they can get your attention hooked in the first few seconds, chances are you’ll end up watching the rest of that video or movie.

The hook can be something shocking, surprising, exciting, sad, or intriguing.

Now, the danger lies in being hooked on the wrong things.

The longer you stay hooked on something that isn’t good or useful for you, your life, your future, or your mind, the more destructive it becomes.

The truth? You’re not reaching your goals because you’re hooked on the wrong things, feeding your mind junk, taking the wrong actions, building bad habits, and settling for a mediocre life."

Mediocre (adj.) → Poor quality

How Are We Being Hooked on the Wrong Things? (And How to Avoid It)

"Did you know the average person spends 2.5 hours a day on social media a day?

That’s 912 hours a year; enough to learn a new language, start a business, or get in the best shape of your life.

But instead, we’re hooked… on what? The news? Stupid movies, TV Shows? Cat videos? Drama? Endless scrolling?"

Social media platforms, ads, and entertainment are designed to hijack our attention.

  • Social Media: Platforms like Instagram and TikTok use endless scrolling, notifications, and algorithm-driven content to keep you hooked. Every "like" and comment triggers dopamine, making you crave more and watch more.

"When was the last time you lost an hour to Instagram reels or TikTok doomscrolling… and realized you gained nothing?"

Probably today?

  • Ads: Companies spend billions studying human psychology to create ads that manipulate emotions—fear, desire, curiosity, excitement, elegance,—so you click, buy, or watch longer.

  • Hollywood & Streaming: Shows and movies use cliffhangers, fast cuts, and suspense to make you binge-watch instead of being productive.

"Think about this: Netflix doesn’t care about your dreams.

Tiktok doesn’t want you to succeed.

Your help center, powered by Mintlify

Mintlify raised a $45M Series B at a $500M valuation, led by a16z and Salesforce Ventures, with participation from Bain Capital Ventures, Y Combinator, and DST Global.

We power documentation for 20,000+ companies including Microsoft, Anthropic, Coinbase, and PayPal, reaching over 100 million people every year.

Over 50% of traffic across our customer base is now AI agents, not humans. Agents don't browse documentation, they reason and act on it. If that knowledge is incomplete or poorly structured, your product becomes invisible to AI entirely.

Three capabilities leading the way:

Workflows — always-on automation to keep docs accurate.
MCP support — connect your knowledge directly to external agents.
AI agent — write and update content based on prompts.

They make money by keeping you hooked. But you? You profit by breaking free. By taking your power back.

So here’s what you need to do: Every time you reach for your phone and open social media,

ask yourself this: ‘Is this helping me or hurting me?’ Because everything is about self-awareness.

If you are unaware of your actions, thoughts and feelings, anyone can hypnotize you, hook your attention, keep you hooked for hours and hours and steal everything you have.

Think about this: how do magicians get someone’s attention and steal something in their pocket? They hook their attention to something, make them busy and reach for their pocket without them noticing anything.

"Imagine a street magician performing a classic pickpocket trick. How does it work?

  1. The Hook: He flashes a bright coin, or a deck of cards, or some cash and keeps playing with them with one hand.

  2. The Distraction: Your eyes lock onto the trick he is performing. Your brain is so focused on it, you don’t notice his other hand sliding into your pocket.

  3. The Theft: By the time you realize the trick is done… your wallet’s already gone.

Now here’s the scary part:
Social media, ads, and entertainment do the SAME thing to you and me every day.

  • The Hook: ‘Just one more video!’ ‘Limited-time sale!’ ‘You won’t believe what happens next!’

  • The Distraction: You’re glued to the screen, scrolling, clicking, consuming.

  • The Theft: Meanwhile, time is flying by. Focus is no longer there. Then you wonder why you can’t study for two hours at a time.

Your most valuable asset—your attention—is stolen while you are watching the magician performing the trick.

The difference? A magician steals your wallet. These apps, the news channels, Netflix and movies steal your time, your potential, your productivity, and your energy.

"Your attention your life. Whoever controls it controls YOU."

"Being hooked on the wrong things is like eating junk food all day; you feel full but malnourished. Your mind needs protein, not cheese and candy."

3. Ways to Be Hooked on the RIGHT Things:

  1. Fix Your Environment

    • Unfollow distracting accounts and people who don’t bring you value; turn off notifications.

ADHD management designed for how your brain actually works

Most ADHD apps are just glorified timers. Inflow is different - built by people with ADHD, backed by clinical psychologists, using CBT-inspired strategies. Learn to manage time blindness, burnout, overwhelm, and procrastination in 5-minute daily modules. Real tools, real change.

Replace doomscrolling with educational podcasts, books, or skill-building content.

  1. Use the "Two-Minute Rule" for Better Habits

    • If a task takes less than 2 minutes (e.g., reading a useful article instead of watching reels), do it immediately.

    • Small wins build momentum for bigger success.

  2. Invest Time in High-Value Activities

    • Spend time on money-making skills (reading, coding, marketing, sales) or health (exercise, meditation).

    • The more you engage in high-reward activities, the less you’ll crave empty distractions and when you know your enemy, you will learn what actions you need to take. Like, if you know there’s a wolf in your neighborhood, you will learn how to deal with it.

Remember: Your attention is your most valuable asset. Protect it, invest it wisely, and watch your life transform.

"For the next 24 hours, track every time you get ‘hooked.’
Was it useful? If not, replace it with just 5 minutes of reading, listening, learning, or planning your goals. Small wins stack up."

Always remember, small change big results.
